TWO FURTHER REMINDERS

Andrew Bethune, our church’s Chairman, has shared via email the following message about our forthcoming “Life of the Church Meeting” on 19 October, 7.30pm on Zoom

We are a church that is run by its members, and so it’s important that everyone has a say in how we operate. The Life of the Church meeting planned for 19 October is a time when we can pick up the threads from last year’s ‘next steps’ meeting, review where we are, and think about where we go next. The short paper that Clare and Brendan put together, which I circulated a few weeks ago can be read at this link. Please read it carefully and be prepared to share your thoughts and ideas. We’ve decided to run the meeting as a Zoom event. That way, everyone can take part on an equal basis. Please let Brendan know on secretary@cambridgeunitarian.org  if you wish to attend.

The next series of bi-weekly Wednesday Evening Conversations (starting on Wednesday 12th October, 7.30pm-9pm) will centre on the Gospel of John — the highly influential, puzzling, and certainly the most philosophically complex, of the canonical Gospels.

Although the conversations will always be rooted in good, contemporary historical/theological scholarship the way they will actually unfold over the weeks will be lead by the questions and thoughts of those taking part. As always, there is no presumption that the text must be agreed with in any religious/doctrinal fashion; all that we hope to achieve is a better understanding of what on earth it was that the Gospel writer hoped to pass on to his readers/hearers.

The text we’ll be working from is the recent translation produced by David Bentley Hart but we’ll also be looking at the different ways the Gospel has been translated over the years and in different countries/cultures. At the moment we have participants who can bring to the table French, Spanish, Japanese, Dutch and German versions of the text.

The conversations will start at 7.30pm and run until 9pm and will take place on the following Wednesday evenings:

12th October — General historical/theological orientation and initial thoughts
26th October — The Prologue (John 1:1-18)
9th November — TBC
23rd November — TBC
7th December — TBCAnd, lastly, here’s the Zoom link for all five meetings. I look forward to seeing some of you on the evening of the 12th October.
